An easy way to meet, talk and decide where the evening goes.
Meeting for a drink can be one of the simplest ways to get to know someone.
It gives you enough time to have a proper conversation without immediately committing to a full dinner, and Christchurch has plenty of places where one drink can easily become another venue, a walk or dinner if the evening is going well.
A drink sits comfortably between a quick coffee and a long dinner.
You have time to settle into the conversation, but neither person needs to commit to several hours before you have even met.
For a first meeting, a good bar should be somewhere public, comfortable enough to talk and easy for both people to reach independently. If the chemistry is there, you can always decide together whether to stay longer or move somewhere else.
Christchurch is particularly good for this because many central-city venues are clustered within walking distance of one another.
SweetMeet tip: Choose the first venue — not the entire evening. One drink is enough to start.
A casual wine, beer or cocktail can be ideal when you are meeting for the first time. The important thing is being able to hear each other and leave naturally when you are ready.
A proper cocktail bar creates a little more atmosphere without requiring the commitment of dinner. It can work particularly well for a second or third date when you already know there is some chemistry.
Sometimes the best evening is the one you do not fully plan. Meet somewhere for a drink first, then decide together whether dinner makes sense.
High Street and the surrounding central city offer a mix of bars, restaurants and late-night venues within a relatively compact area.
Austin Club is one example. The venue currently describes itself as Christchurch’s underground cocktail bar, operating Wednesday to Saturday from 5pm until late at 236 High Street.
It is the kind of place that suits a deliberate cocktail date more than a quick coffee: atmospheric, central and easy to pair with somewhere else later in the evening.
Cathedral Square gives you a different atmosphere again.
OGB operates from the Old Government Building at 28 Cathedral Square and combines a heritage setting, cocktails, food and live music. Its courtyard and bar are currently open seven days, making it a flexible option for drinks that may or may not develop into dinner.
New Regent Street works well when you want somewhere with a little more personality.
Gin Gin is located at 4–6 New Regent Street and currently opens seven days a week, with a strong gin and cocktail focus alongside food.
Nearby wine bars and restaurants also make the street useful if you decide to continue the evening rather than staying in one venue.
Oxford Terrace remains one of Christchurch’s most concentrated nightlife areas, with bars and restaurants along the Avon and easy walking access to Riverside and the rest of the central city.
ChristchurchNZ currently describes The Terrace as a central nightlife hub and highlights the wider city mix of rooftop bars, underground speakeasies and live-music venues.
A distinctive underground cocktail bar in central Christchurch with a relaxed, intimate atmosphere. Austin Club works particularly well when you want to meet over cocktails without committing to a full dinner, and the central location makes it easy to continue the evening elsewhere if things are going well.
OGB combines cocktails, food and a heritage Cathedral Square setting, making it a flexible choice for anything from a first drink to a longer dinner date. Start in the bar or courtyard and, if the evening is going well, there is no need to commit to the whole night in advance.
Gin Gin brings a colourful New Regent Street setting together with an extensive gin and cocktail selection and a food menu designed for sharing. It works well for a relaxed first drink, while the central location makes it easy to continue the evening elsewhere if the connection is going well.
SweetMeet local information is checked periodically. Venues, opening hours and businesses can change, so confirm current details directly before making plans.
Cocktails can make the date feel more deliberate without becoming formal. They work particularly well when atmosphere matters and you already know you want more than a very quick meeting.
A wine bar often creates a quieter setting where conversation is the main event. Christchurch has a growing wine-bar scene, including intimate central-city options around New Regent Street and the CBD. ChristchurchNZ’s current wine guide highlights venues such as Downstairs on New Regent Street among the city’s smaller, more relaxed wine-focused spaces.
Not every date needs polished cocktails. If both people prefer something relaxed, a pub, brewery or casual bar may feel far more natural.
The venue should suit the people meeting — not some imaginary rule about what a “premium” date is supposed to look like.
A beautiful bar does not help much if neither of you can hear the other person.
For a first or early date, look for somewhere that gives you enough atmosphere to feel like an occasion without making conversation difficult.
If you want live music or a busier venue, that may work better later in the evening once you have already had time to talk.
The venue should support the date rather than become the date.
Meeting for drinks does not mean you need to stay until closing time.
One drink can be enough to work out whether the easy conversation you had online carries over into real life.
If it does, decide together what comes next.
Christchurch makes that particularly easy in the central city because bars, restaurants, Riverside and other venues sit relatively close together.
If it does not, both people can finish the drink and leave without feeling that a long dinner or entire evening has been wasted.
For some couples, drinks are the date.
For others, they are simply the first part of the evening.
Meeting for a drink before dinner can be a useful middle ground when you are interested in spending longer together but still want to keep the start of the evening relaxed.
If things are going well, move on to dinner. If not, there is no obligation to extend the meeting simply because a restaurant booking was made in advance.
A bar is still a public first meeting, but sensible boundaries remain important.
Arrange your own transport, keep control of your drink, avoid sharing sensitive personal or financial information too quickly and do not feel pressured to extend the evening.
Being discreet does not mean hiding. It means respecting one another’s privacy and allowing trust to develop at a pace that works for both people.
